Once upon a time, I went to Art School in Baltimore and worked at a record/video store. One evening John Waters came in and rented a movie. I took the opportunity to ask him a personal question.
“How do you get your mustache to look like that?”
He seemed very comfortable answering, “I shave down and then fill in any areas that need it with eyeliner.”
He was very personable. Funny, friendly, cool. That plus the fact that he’s an icon of iconoclasm makes him one of my favorite people.
(That same year, I ran into Johnny Depp at a bar, in town making the John Waters film Cry Baby. Girls were going crazy over him and I thought they were being ridiculous.)
