“Hey, cows! Get to work!”
I often think of this wonderful book that I read a few years ago. It’s about working as a creative in a corporate environment. I highly recommend it (the book, not the corporate environment.) I especially like the part where a man in a suit stands at a fence and yells at the cows because they’re just standing around eating grass, not producing milk.
If you’re a creative person, you know how hard it is to produce all the time. Sometimes you have to do things that don’t look like work in order to create something good later on.
I do a lot of things that don’t look like work:
- Planting stuff in the garden
- Getting the mail
- Doing laundry
- Dusting
- Pinning pins on Pinterest
- Liking things on Facebook
- Making granola
- Writing a blog
- Buying shoes
- Organizing my clothes closet
- Making lists
- Trolling Craigslist for Mid-Century Modern furniture
- Buying Mid-Century Modern furniture
- Deleting emails
- Straightening pillows
- Going for a walk
- Reading a book
- Working on my tan
- Listening to birds
It may look like the opposite of work. But, it enables me to create. At least I like to think so.
